The Federal is Now The Fed

Earlier this month, The Federal closed down for a bit to become The Fed.

Cesar Zapata and Ani Meinhold changed up the interior of the restaurant and the menu.

“We want The Fed to cater to the neighborhood – on one hand, have it be a place where guests can come to grab a bite and go,” says Ani “and on the other hand, be a place for the neighborhood and locals to kick back, relax and enjoy.”

Shareable plates categorized as “For the Homies,” will offer starters for guests to nibble and share including Cilantro Edamame Hummus, Tropical Guac with a choice of tortilla chips, house chicharrones or baby veggies and Salmon Poke.

Between bread options include baked-not-fried Tostadas (hand-pressed corn tortilla), available in options like Huevo, Sweet Platano and Gulf Seafood Ceviche as well as Tortas (Mexican-style sandwich) with more indulgent offerings like an all-American Angus burger playfully named La Gringa and the Queso, a grown-up take on grilled cheese.

Capitalizing on the bowl craze are a five different options that can be spooned up or forked over a bed of lettuce with options to add cheese, avocado and proteins like chicken, shrimp and steak. Zapata’s interpretation of fajitas, dubbed “Skillets,” is an exercise in the art of create-your-own experience with several affordable combinations of proteins, vegetables and sauces from $8 to $14.

For Zapata, the new concept provides a chance to incorporate his Texas roots with a large focus on his love for smoke, chilies and Southwest flavors.

Miami Finally Gets a Mezcaleria – Clandestino

Miami finally gets a Mezcaleria called Clandestino.

Clandestino is Miami’s first and only Mezcaleria, a dedicated mezcal bar focused on one of the oldest & finest Mexican spirits: agave based mezcal.

Think of Clandestino as a Mexican speakeasy on Washington Avenue. Clandestino now serves over 18 original mezcal craft cocktails recipes, named after Mexican pop icons like lucha libre wrestlers El Santo and famous artists like Frida.

Clandestino is open Sunday-Wednesday 8 p.m. – 4 a.m. & Thursday-Saturday 8 p.m. – 4 a.m.

Dragonfly Opening in Doral on April 9

The first of many openings at the highly anticipated Downtown Doral project, Dragonfly Izakaya & Fish Market is opening on April 9th in Downtown Doral. This will be the 3rd Florida location for the Dragonfly brand and will feature an artisanal fish market. The brand’s flagship location in Gainesville focuses on sushi, while the Orlando location concentrates on the robatayaki (robata grill).

Menu highlights include Okonomiyaki ($12) a Japanese seafood pancake with shrimp, octopus and squid; Chahan ($15) a garlic blue crab fried rice; and a Robatayaki Grilled Chicken neck-to-tail tasting menu, including $8 selections such as Bonjiri (tail), Momo Negi (thigh) and Tebasaki (wing). The menu will also feature market favorites such as a Japanese Lobster Roll ($25), Large Stone Crabs (three for $35) and Kumamoto Oysters ($4 each) noted for their mild brininess, sweet flavor and honeydew finish, as well as classic and specialty sushi rolls, sashimi and nigiri selections prepared by Dragonfly’s master chefs.

Other things you can expect at the Doral location include a traditional fish market that nods to the famous Tsukiji Fish Market in Japan; a progressive beverage program featuring a dedicated Japanese ice program, a rare and award-winning Japanese whiskey list, a seasonal Omakase cocktail list and a unique sake and shōchū list; the market will vend bento boxes to-go, house-made and hard-to-find boutique items, fresh seafood sourced both locally and from exotic waters across the globe and more.

The Group Behind Ariete, Bring You Baby Jane

The group behind Ariete are at it again creating Native Sons Hospitality and opening Baby Jane. Baby Jane will be located in Brickell and will provide ‘a laid-back bungalow atmosphere for post-work craft cocktails and evening snacks like duck and foie gras croquettas and pastrami tacos.’

The menu at Baby Jane will be created by Executive Chef Michael Beltran. Menu items include house grilled wings with a choice of jerk, soy caramel or buffalo sauce, duck and foie gras croquettas, tacos made with short rib pastrami, “pork and pickles”made with homemade pickles, grilled pork belly, the “Pig Stack” burger made with two pork patties, American cheese, and house made special sauce and the “Chug Burger,” with a double-patty, B&B pickles and cheddar cheese.

Baby Jane will include local beers on tap, beers by the bottle, wines, and of course cocktails. Baby Jane will also offer an ever-changing Punch Board, and feature drinks like the “Jane and Juice” made with passion fruit, jalapeno, gin, honey and fresh mint.

NYC’s Most Famous Cheesecake is Coming to South Florida – Junior’s

NYC’s most famous cheesecake is coming to South Florida – Junior’s Restaurant.

Junior’s Restaurant is opening it’s first location at Mizner Park in Boca Raton this September.

The menu at Junior’s will be similar to their NYC restaurants including the famous cheesecake.

“It’s owner Alan Rosner also alludes that if this location goes well, South Florida could see more Junior’s in the works and its cheesecake available for sale in local grocery stores like Publix.”

KYU Officially Opens in Wynwood

Chef Michael Lewis and General Manager Steven Haigh, formerly from Zuma, have opened KYU in Wynwood.

The menu features a variety of grill specialties, seasonal locally sourced produce and new-style sashimi. Highlights include Duck Breast “Burnt Ends” with yuzu pickles; Wagyu Beef Brisket with black shichimi pepper; and Thai Fried Rice Stone Pot; balanced by lighter dishes such as Heirloom Tomatoes with red onion and shiso; Hamachi in white ponzu, green herbs and chili; and Crispy Spicy Snapper Tartare.

KYU features a huge grill where guests will be able to watch Lewis and his team in action in the open exhibition kitchen.

KYU is located at 251 25th Street in Wynwood.
